Constructor: Paula Gamache
Time: 9:54 (my NYT display)/9:55 (the all solvers NYT display) (kinda like the nittiness of the one second diff). Like others, was readin clockwise and thinkin LIE for a while for the ring. Got kinda disgusted with the E side where I had A PLAN for A PLOT and YELLS and YELPS for YEOWS and it all started feelin kinda arbitrary. Favorite mistake was laying down ANYA for OLGA. Beaten by around 90 seconds by tushnet and 40 seconds by sanfranman59.
CrossWorld buzz: Below average. There's a core problem here for insiders. The ring theme doesn't look demanding with its 24 easy LEI letters. Given that, the abundance of dubious -ese looks really bad. (More on that issue and whether the puzz should be published in valuecompetition.typepad.com/metarex/2013/05/send-lei-day-back-to-the-shop-the-mr-verdict.html).
CrossOver buzz: Average. The theme has some real "hey I didn't know that!" pop, espcially given that plentya folks might be guessin May Day or Law Day. Real people ain't gonna get uptight as CWers will about about the lack of thematic density. But a 78-word Wednesday grid w/ a lotta kindy icky short words and not a lot in the way of high-point scrabble tiles is not so nice for CrossOver, either.
