CrossWorld buzz. Pretty good. Yiddish theme nice--SCHMALTZ, SCHTICK, SCHLEMIEL, SCHMEAR, and SCHMOOZE all nice. Good open grid w/ 76W, 35B. Minimum amount of junk...ASA, LAC, SASS, and CREE are about as bad as it gets, which is considerably better than average. On the other side of the ledger, sparkle is low. The Monday straightforwardness lets down the Yiddish words. Maybe the Puzzlemeister coulda run this on a Wednesday w/ a buncha sarcastic, zingy clues of his devising? Not all puzzes need pop culture and pop names...Gareth is right about that...but given the theme, this is a puzz crying out for humor. Some Jewish show biz names, maybe?...an ABE or a MASON or a MARX or two woulda been nice. To be more practical...in the SE ya coulda done OAFS-FIRE insteada OATS-TIRE...ya coulda tried clues for one or both of those that reference some great comedians or skits.
CrossOver buzz. Pretty good. Humor coulda made a pretty good puzz a good or v. good puzz.
