Time: 7:36. Got incorrect at 7:22 for SONA-NINCAMPOOP; the A was a relic from xxxLAMPOON, which I'd wanted for a while. Lotsa slow-ups and mistakes for a Monday--had CHUMP for CHEAT, DODO for DOPE, and A BIT for A TAD in the SE. My better tushnet tore it up in 4:30.
CrossWorld buzz: Good. High variance on this one. Whole lotta thematic density, w/ a v. nice balance between "Fool" as TRICK answers (six of those) and "Fool" as DOPE answers (six of those also, including the three long ones; DUPE, appropriately, swings both ways) As noted by the commentariat, there's stuff here that ain't Monday level (e.g., TROCHE, FORT LEE for non-NYC metro people). The SW as the usually mellow ACM points out could use a rewrite, and ASSES is open to criticism on the basis that it confusticates the theme. It all leaves MR feeling good but not great about this one. Would be willing to stand up for this puzz as supergreat if it had included an implicit secondary theme with another doubled set of answers that fit the interesting "FOOL a FOOL" pattern. Lotsa words w multiple meanings, but precious few that fit the fool-fool pattern; "love-love" and "hate-hate" kinda work but not quite. Ya coulda nodded in that direction by cluing NOD as "Okay" and BAD as "Okay!?"...then though ya woulda added to the "ain't right for Monday!" griping by CWers...
CrossOver buzz: Very good. The theme is a wow. The kinda legit tech-y crit points that bring this down some for CrossWorld ain't so important for CrossOver.
