Time: 23:41. A smooth Google-less solve in a dark room in the sleepless middle of the night here in Oregon where I'm visiting my sister...had THANES for LAIRDS, but otherwise not much in the way of screwups to report...the tennis puns smoothed the way. Another day in which my personal "< 2 x Rex" time standard was met...
CrossWorld buzz: Pretty good. We're not so much into tennis as we were in 1977, right? Think I would have liked this puzzle quite a lot in my newbie solving days in the long long gone Will Weng era. Solving it now as a jaded oldster brings back images of Borg and McEnroe and Connors in those little shorts they used to wear, joined by Mark Hamill as young Luke...pleasant, but kinda dated. Plenty of nice fill...TIP JAR, GET A JOB, etc.
CrossOver buzz. Good. There's a pretty fair overlap one suspects between tennis people and potential NYT puzzle people...the kinda stale quality of the punny theme for habitues is not so much of an issue for newbies...the title that tells all is another nod to newbies. The pretty fill that habitues appreciate will give newbies a buzz, too.
