Time: 7:58. Got incorrect at 7:20; my probs were the typos REFERSE for REFEREES and SEEUMS for SERUMS. Pretty smooth solve by MR-ian standards; much <2x Rex. BAR CAR yielded right away and got things rolling. Had kind of a guilty inside knowledge feeling in laying down ST. PETE quickly to crack the right side. Had DEPOSITER and nearly had BERI BERI as a result. Theme was pretty straightforward and kinda useful; it helped fix the DEPOSITER stupidity.
CrossWorld buzz: Good. The OTIS and SITO elevator cars going up and down on different floors make for a v. nice spatial theme. The verbal theme is fine, and BAR CAR in the upper left is a nice implicit theme bonus...makes me think not only of the Mad Men-era commuter train cars but of elevator cars in prewar NYC apartment buildings. Agree w/ Rex and some of the commentariat on fusty fill and less than sparkling cluing. 74 words w/ only 32 black...nice.
CrossOver buzz: Very good. The accessible theme and nice visuals of this puzz count for a lot. The "this ain't this year's model" feeling that is kind of a problem for CrossWorlders is not so much of a problem for RealWorlders.
