Constructor: Gareth Bain
Time: 17:15. No incorrect signal. Lotsa mistakes entered and/or nearly entered...INUIT for INCAS, PINTO for MIATA, STAID for STERN, YOU SEND ME for YOUNG GIRL, OH COME ON for OH PLEASE, CHEROOT for PIERROT. Wanted -CROSSE for KENOSHA ...favorite screw-up was my long period of wanting ON SOFA-ED or something like that for "Watching the big game, say" as opposed to ON SAFARI. Shoulda guessed ON SAFARI given the Africa plus animals signature answers in Gareth Bain puzzes. Barely <2x Rex; creamed by tushnet's impressive 12:02.
CrossWorld buzz: Good. As noted in RexLand, THE AGING PROCESS ain't a great anchor. But combine it w/ YOUNG GIRL crossing it and then toss in HAGS and PROM KING and then I HATE MEN and FEMALE as bonuses and you've got a nice implicit theme w/ some real edge. Reasonable sparkle in all the corners...PIERROT, SAMOVAR, ORIGAMI, and CLAM BAR are a nice around the world combo. Tech is fine w/ 70 words (oops--72),* 32 black, a reasonably open field, and decent short fill...like the crunch in ECO, OPS, and MOW...it's not a classic open-field end of the week puzz but that's ok.
CrossOver buzz: Very good. Think that the v. nice implicit theme counts for more and that the weak anchor 15 and the less-than-wide-open grid count for less w/ more casual solvers.
*Thx to Evan for the correction on this..had it right, saw Rex's 70, quickly recounted and came up w/ 70 also...suspect that Evan would be less of a conformist than MR on Asch line experiments :)
